Oh, Kyle, we missed you, too!

After clearing waivers and doing a stint in Manitoba a couple of weeks ago, forward Kyle Wellwood was recalled to the Vancouver Canucks last Tuesday due to an injury to Pavol Demitra. Since then, he’s recorded two power-play goals and an assist in two games, helping to spark a dismal Canucks man advantage. Vancouver had managed only three power play goals in seven games prior to Saturday’s tilt against Edmonton, in which the Canucks scored four times in six chances with the extra attacker.

Apparently, like milk, the AHL does a body good. And, um, we’re sorry about those mean things we said, Kyle. We didn’t mean them, even though the Augustus Gloop bit was damn good. We were just so disappointed, and it came out the wrong way. Hey, wanna get a beer? No? OK, that’s cool. Watch out for that Milan Lucic tomorrow. He’s a monster.

Canucks waive Kyle Wellwood

Friday, October 17th, 2008

When an NHL team picks you up off the waiver wire and your stint with them starts with the coach publicly impugning your fitness, it’s probably not a good sign.

That was the case with talented Canucks forward Kyle Wellwood, who was sent back to the waiver wire Friday after playing in just one regular-season game and recording no points.

It’s a shame, as I had high hopes for Wellwood. I really thought he’d have learned his lesson after he fell into the river of chocolate and the Oompa-Loompas sucked him up through that tube, but I guess not. Just goes to show, you can lead an athlete to a million-dollar contract, but you can’t make him work for it.
